This week’s best new songs: Charli XCX, Spiritualized, Christian Lee Hutson and more

Throughout the week, we’re updating our Best New Songs playlist with the new stuff that caught our attention the most, whether it’s a single leading up to an album release or a recently unveiled deep cut. And every Monday, we bring together the best new songs released over the past week (the eligibility period starts Monday and ends Sunday night) into this best new music segment.

This week we kick off with Jenny Lewis’ “Puppy and a Truck,” an honest and whimsical tribute to the singer’s new puppy; Charli XCX’s collaboration with Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polacheck, “New Shapes,” which combines the heartbreak and ecstasy of love so infectiously as it blends’ 80s and avant-pop production; “Always Together With You” by Spiritualized, which leads their new album Everything was beautiful, a heartfelt space-rock song that slowly rises to something soaring and triumphant; Christian Lee Hutson’s new single “Strawberry Lemonade”, which features a production by Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst and shines with sweet melodies and thoughtful lyrics; Cassandra Jenkins “American Spirits”, an excerpt from her latest album that beautifully relays the struggle to communicate harsh emotional truths with tenderness; and Chastity Belt’s disturbing and cathartic new single, ‘Fear’.
