April 2 is celebrated in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world as World Autism Awareness Day. This day also marks International Children’s Book Day.
Autism Day aims to raise awareness about autism, a childhood developmental disorder characterized by impaired communication, excessive rigidity and emotional detachment. He was designated by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/62/139). World Autism Awareness Day”, voted in council on November 1, 2007, and adopted on December 18, 2007.
The theme of “World Autism Awareness Day 2022” is inclusive quality education for all. Access to education, which had been facilitated for years, especially for people with autism, was disrupted after 2020 with the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. This successfully reversed years of progress and exacerbated inequalities in education.
Meanwhile, International Children’s Book Day is also celebrated on April 2, the birthday of Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. The objective of the day is to create and develop in children a taste for reading. The day also highlights children’s books such as those written by Hans Christian Anderson. The day was first celebrated in 1966.
Children and adults with autism spectrum disorders have a wide range of abilities. Some people cannot speak at all and many have delayed or limited verbal communication. Some are very impaired in their cognitive thinking while others are extremely gifted.
Famous Bangladeshi poet, lyricist and composer Mahbubul Khalid wrote a song to raise awareness about autism. The song titled “Autism to Kichu Noy” (Autism is not a disease) was tuned by the late popular composer Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul. Famous singer Samina Chowdhury lent her voice to the song.
Meanwhile, Mahbubul Khalid also wrote another song about child rearing and proper atmosphere for their development. The music of the song titled ‘Choto Choto Chele Meye’ (Little Children) also composed by Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul which was sung by two young singers Saran and Luipa.
